Shitty rental cars companies and manuals. Every cars armed with a slushbox CVT or automatic. Why is it Like this?
Automatic is probably because people who can't drive a manual and will see "oh! Cheaper prices! I don't know how to drive a manual, but I'll manage...." Gets a manual Sonic. Brings it back a day later, with the clutch completely gone and that shit faced look. It's ironic that probably less than 10 percent of the US population knows How to work a manual. Sure, manuals are fun. Once you know how to drive one. If you don't, you just try to put it in gear and stall, to the ire of the person behind you.
Or maybe no one really has consideration for rental cars in general. We can't deny it, we hoon them. "This isn't the Camaro I'm paying a mortgage for, but I'm paying 70 bucks a day! Better make use of this!"
So...off to the winter snow laden parking lot for some hooning. When you're driving a rental car (kinda borrowing from an opponaut) suddenly it's the most powerful car you have ever owned. You can abuse it (because it isn't yours) and plus, aren't rental cars meant to be abused?
Some European rental car companies can handle manual cars on their lot because a lot more people know how to drive a manual, unlike America. And the possibility Europe has more manual drivers is because driving is probably a much more expensive privilege, so why not learn manual? Almost all of us are born with a automatic gear shift in out hands and the use of only our right leg.
So there was this wonderful car rental place by o'hare airport. It was dollar rent a car. It had decently cheap rates, but the fucking receptionist was racist as hell and the other looked like she was reaching 55, had a boob job, and too much makeup. Oh yeah there was a 2 hour line. Pure insanity lining up. She showed us a fiat 500 for a "small car category". Didn't even tell what car they had. (It was actually a yaris, which I had seen peeling away). Then it was the large car category. It was sketchy and vague as shit.
Ended up getting a Mitsubishi Galant. It smelled slightly like cigarettes and had the seat comfort of a Mitsubishi. (Wasn't good).
The rental place was negligent in managing the damn place. They left the ####ing keys in the ignition ON THE LOT for EVERY CAR! They didn't have a key thing in a glass shelf. No, you can walk up to any rental car and basically start it up. And there wasn't much staff there, which accounted for a 2 hour wait for a rental car.
Their only check was at the entrance/exit. the security guy checked your slip and the license plate, and said you can go. Wtf.
At the check in for the returning the cars, there was only 1 person on board for checking then in when there was 10 cars lining up. Not cool.
At least the shuttle drivers universally drive like lemans drivers.

They probably got sick of people burning up clutches while they taught themselves to drive the stick haha

Its a very poor business decision to have manual rental cars these days...that's just a fact.

The reason so many more people in Europe can drive manuals is because it's mandatory that you take the driving test in one to receive a full license.

Some? You have to go out of your way to find an automatic rental in Europe, and usually pay a premium. Especially a few years ago. A manual is the default in Europe.

Like Vracktal mentioned; you won't get a full license in many (most? all?) European countries when you do your driving test in an automatic. Almost everybody does it in a manual, I know exactly no one who hasn't. Given the prevalence of the manual gearbox in Europe, especially before the double clutch automated manuals were introduced, this isn't odd.
